Circa 1890 Fine Quality Solid Silver 60 Piece Table Service Canteen of Cutlery for 12 People by Renowned Maker Posen.

Circa 1890, German hallmarked solid silver .800 table service canteen for 12 people by the firm of Posen, an excellent family firm in Frankfort, who also received the royal warrant. This firm, with their renowned staff of chasers and engravers, produced some of the finest silver in Germany.

The firm was founded in Frankfurt on the Main in 1869 by Brendina Wetzlar, the widow of Lazarus Jacob Posen, a silversmith and retailer of Polish descent. Under her direction, the firm became the largest supplier of Judaica in the late 19th century. Her son Jacob L. Posen joined the firm in 1880. In the 20th century the firm was under the direction of Brendina’s grandsons Jakob, Hermann and Moritz Posen, and closed early in the 20th century.

Made in the double struck (pattern on both sides) fiddle and thread pattern. The knife handles are .925 fine sterling. The canteen is heavy in weight and in very good condition, still having sharp points to bowls and tines. It must have had very gentle use in its lifetime.

The set is presented in five individual tarn proof rolls.

The service consists of 60 pieces total, comprising 12 settings of 5 pieces each including: large dinner knives, large dinner forks, dessert/soup spoons, dessert/salad forks, and teaspoons.

The knife blades are stainless steel.

Sizes-9.25 long knife, 8.25 inches long dinner fork, and 8.75 inches long dessert spoon.

Weight-2515 grams or over 5.5 lbs of silver, not including any weight at all for the sterling handled knives.

All pieces are engraved with the initial "E" on one side only, which can be removed if desired.
