Pair of George III Silver Candlesticks

Description

A very fine pair of silver candlesticks, in the style of Robert Adam (1723-92), decorated with new-classical motifs including relief masks on the stepped square bases.

The candlesticks are hallmarked for London 1772/3 and bear the mark of John Carter. Carter was a specialist candlestick and salver maker, known to have worked to the designs of Robert Adam (Geoffrey Beard, The Work of Robert Adam, Colour Plate 59)
