The head is hinged and opens to reveal the chamber where (non-safety) matches are stored and would have been struck on the intricately cast feathers on the back of the bird, the casting beautifully executed.

A quality and rare piece in excellent condition, having been professionally polished by my silversmith. Excellent condition, the base having a diameter measuring 6 1/4" and standing 8 3/4" tall.
