This beautifully made piece is very unusual.
In addition, it also has two deep hinged lidded compartments on the other inside lid, one larger than the other. They can hold coins, stamps, and the like. In the centre, there is a hinged leaf that has an ivory tablet on one side to use for notes, while the other side holds a photograph.
On the exterior, the stripe design and overall engraved case has a blank cartouche in the centre of one side, suitable for personalisation if desired.
A fitted pencil is neatly held within a fitted slot, and has a pull ring attached.
Size-approximately 3.5 inches long by 2.75 inches wide by 5/8 inches deep.
Weight-a very heavy 182 grams.
All hinges, and sprung catches work very well, and the case is made of a very thick gauge of silver, and is very heavy. It would have been a very expensive piece when made.
I have never seen anything like this before with fitted lidded compartments. It is the antique precious metal version of a wallet and personal organiser! It is also ideal for business cards, stamps, etc.
A rare thing in very good condition.
