Sheffield 1900 Rare Late Victorian Solid Silver and Ivory Bread Fork in the Form of Medieval Battle Axe.

Description

Sheffield 1900 very unusual English hallmarked solid silver and ivory bread fork in the rare form of a double edged medieval battle axe.

In Victorian times bread was not touched with fingers when served, and a bread fork was always used. Today, they make excellent meat and cheese forks.

This sharp pointed serving piece is very finely detailed. It is made from heavy gauged silver, and has a very nicely carved ivory handle, with twisting fluted band near the top of the stem. The ivory has a lovely colour and patina.

It was beautifully made by Henry Wigfull, well known maker.

This design is very distinctive and rare, and a wonderful gift for the collector of serving pieces or medieval weaponry designed silver. I have only ever seen one other, which was also exactly the same design and year, and by the same maker.

Size-7 inches long by 1.5 inches wide.

Weight-50 grams.

With just the usual fine surface scratching, in very good condition overall.

It will be quite a talking point, and a very distinctive piece to own.
