Dutch 1872 Cast Silver Hinged Cover Box in Cow Form, Imported to England and Assayed in Chester 1903.

19th century
Description

Dutch 1872 hallmarked cast silver cow form hinged cover pill or snuff box with partial Dutch hallmarks as well as full English hallmarks for Chester 1903. The Dutch marks for .934 fine silver (higher than English sterling) are on the base, and the English marks are on both base and side. When it was imported into England in 1903, it was tested and assayed with full English hallmarks for at least .925 fine silver.

Marked by Berthold Muller, silversmith and importer of Continental silver, who imported many silver boxes.

The reclining cow is realistically modelled, even showing the side rib indentation under the skin and nice head detail, and has a hinged cover on the base which closes securely. It is suitable for pills, snuff or whatever one wishes.

Size-2.75 inches long by 7/8 inches wide.

Weight-35 grams.

A very collectable piece for collectors of animal or novelty silver, silver box collectors, and those who collect Chester silver (this assay office closed in 1962).

An unusual silver box in very good condition.

Declaration

Serpentine Antiques has dated this piece to the 1870s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
