Birmingham 1899 Very Unusual Solid Silver Scent Bottle Flask Case by Henry Matthews.

19th century
Description

Birmingham 1899 English hallmarked solid silver scent bottle flask case with all over repousse pattern on both sides. It includes a pair of birds (possibly love birds) on each side and a scroll and foliate design, as well as a pretty scalloped design along the edges. There is also a vacant cartouche on both sides for personalisation if desired.

Made by Henry Matthews, famous maker of such items, and bears his maker's mark.

This unusual piece was meant to hold and protect a scent or smelling salts glass bottle (not included).

The tightly hinged top snaps open with the catch, and then the main body of the case, also securely fastened and hinged, opens flat to totally remove the contents if desired.

The interior of the case retains the original gilding, which would have protected the silver from corrosion. It appears to have had very little use in its life.

Size-3.25 inches high by 2 3/8 inches diameter by 1 5/8 inches deep.

Weight-50 grams.

With very clear hallmarks as well as the mark 29, which was likely for the complementary bottle size.

With one very hard to find tiny pin sized over polish hole to pattern near hinge, this is in very good condition overall.

A wonderful and seldom found impressive piece with very good size, for the collector of novelty silver or scent bottles.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
