London 1895 Solid Silver Matchbox Case by Famous Makers Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co.

Description

London 1895 Victorian English hallmarked solid silver match box case made by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman of Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co., famous makers. Gibson and Langman were in fact the first directors of the company.

The repousse top is designed with a scroll and foliate pattern having the Greenman at the top and bottom. The Greenman is a symbol of rebirth, used for centuries in art, sculpture and metalwork.

Weight-50 grams.

Size-Just under 3 inches long by 2 inches wide by 1 1/8 inches high.

A large and unusual match box case by fine makers in very good condition.

Serpentine Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
