A Late 19th-century Patinated Bronze, C.1890–1900 'The Sleeping Ariadne'

19th century
Description

An elegant and finely modelled late 19th-century bronze depicting the mythological figure of Ariadne reclining in peaceful slumber, attributed to the sculptor Pedro Rigual, circa 1890–1900. Weight 3.37 kg

The composition portrays Ariadne in a graceful, languid pose, her head resting upon one hand whilst the other arm curves above her head. Her flowing classical drapery falls naturally across the figure, revealing the sculptor’s accomplished treatment of the female form and particular attention to the intricate folds of fabric.

The bronze displays a rich, warm brown patination with attractive variations in tone, highlighting the finely worked details of the face, hands, feet and drapery. The elongated rectangular base forms an integral part of the composition.

The subject derives from the classical mythology of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete, who was abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos and subsequently discovered by Dionysus. The sleeping Ariadne became a celebrated subject in classical sculpture and was frequently revisited by European artists during the 19th century.

The bronze is attributed to Pedro Rigual, although no signature has been identified, and the attribution remains unconfirmed.

It is believed that the sculpture may originally have been mounted upon a separate marble plinth, now absent.

A beautifully decorative example of late 19th-century figurative bronze sculpture, equally suited to a traditional interior, library or contemporary collection.

Condition: Attractive aged patination with surface wear consistent with age. No separate marble plinth present.

Hand-filed flat edges on the underside rim: nineteenth-century workshop finishing.
Crisply chiselled drapery folds and sandals: skilled hand cold-work.

This late 19th-century Neoclassical sculpture takes the form of a patinated bronze figure depicting Sleeping Ariadne. Modelled in a reclining pose upon an integral rectangular base, the dark brown metalwork displays a warm patination with lighter bronze highlights visible across the high points of the classical drapery, hair, face, hands and feet. The subject rests her head against one hand while raising her other arm in a languid gesture. Measuring 19 cm high, 31 cm wide and 11 cm deep, the object presents surface wear consistent with age and lacks any separate mounting plinth. Suitable for display in a gentleman's library, the sculpture fits neatly upon a mantelpiece, bookshelf or display cabinet within a traditional interior or modern collection. The compact bronze sits steadily on flat surfaces as a standalone decorative object, bringing classical figurative form to a desk, side table or cabinet top without requiring additional support.

The Sleeping Ariadne motif originates from an ancient Roman marble sculpture based on a Hellenistic original from the 2nd century BCE, depicting Ariadne asleep on the island of Naxos. During the nineteenth century, scaled bronze reductions of this classical composition became popular acquisitions for collectors and Grand Tour travellers.

Bronzes of this era were manufactured using either the lost-wax casting technique or sand casting, after which artisans refined the surface detail through hand chasing. The final brown tone was achieved by applying chemical patination treatments under heat.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit subtle surface wear consistent with age, hand-tooled definition in drapery folds, and unpolished internal casting surfaces. Original castings may also display foundry marks, foundry stamps, or artist signatures near the base.

Position classical bronze figures on dark timber surfaces, stone mantels, or minimalist shelving units to highlight their silhouette. Directional lighting emphasizes the patinated finish and architectural drapery folds of the piece.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding moisture and harsh chemical polishing agents. Applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually protects the delicate patina from oxidation and handling wear.
