French 19th-century Bronze Equestrian Sculpture of King Clovis I. In the Manner of Théodore Gechter.

19th century
Description

A substantial French patinated bronze equestrian sculpture depicting Clovis I (c.466–511), King of the Franks, mounted on a prancing horse. The king is portrayed wearing a crested helmet, armour and scale-patterned body protection, with long hair and a beard. A shield, helmet and other military equipment lie at the horse's feet.

The sculpture is finely modelled with detailed armour, flowing drapery, textured saddlecloth and an expressive horse, raised on an oval naturalistic base with a moulded border. The horse's hindquarters bear two circular cartouches.

The composition is closely related in style and subject to 19th-century French historical bronzes associated with Théodore Gechter (1796–1844). The sculpture appears unsigned, and the precise sculptor, foundry and date have not been established.

Dark brown patinated finish with areas of surface wear and age-related marks.

Dimensions: Approximately 41 cm high x 36 cm long.

Condition:  Surface wear and deposits to the base. Further examination is required to confirm the condition of the underside and any casting or foundry marks.

Clovis, 465-511 A.D., was the founder of the Merovingian line of Frankish kings. He defeated the Burgundians and West Goths and fixed his Court in Paris.

Date of Manufacture

Peter Harris Clocks & Militaria has dated this French Bronze Equestrian Sculpture to the 19th Century.

During the 19th century in France, historical and equestrian bronze sculptures became prominent, often depicting royal figures, warriors, and legendary monarchs influenced by the Romantic movement and detailed casting.

These statues were predominantly created using the lost-wax or sand-casting methods, followed by hand-chasing to refine intricate details and applying chemically induced patinas for depth of colour.

Authentic period bronzes typically exhibit hand-chased surface details, distinct assembly points beneath the base, age-appropriate surface wear, and signatures or foundry marks matching established 19th-century workshops.

Position the sculpture as a focal accent on a dark timber mantelpiece, a mahogany console table, or within a formal study alongside classic books to provide visual balance and structure.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that could strip the original patina, and periodically apply a thin layer of neutral microcrystalline wax.
