Antique Arts & Crafts Oak Bureau | Leaded Glass Doors

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century Arts & Crafts bureau in oak, a distinctive and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and the honest, characterful design of the period.

The top has a central open shelf flanked by a pair of small cupboards with leaded glass doors, above a fall front writing surface with a lock and long decorative brass strap hinges, opening to a fitted interior of pigeonholes, letter divisions and two small drawers with brass knobs.

Below the fall front is an arched kneehole with a single drawer above, flanked by a pair of cupboard doors with brass knobs and pierced brass strap hinges, each opening to storage space.

The bureau stands on trestle ends with shaped feet joined by an undertier shelf, ideal for books or magazines, and the quarter-sawn oak displays a stunning figured grain with bold medullary ray flashes and a warm, rich colour with a mellow patina.

Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable Arts & Crafts oak bureau of compact proportions, a perfect addition to any study, home office, hallway or living room.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Leaded glass cupboard doors: geometric glazing popular across the 1910s and 1920s.
Cut-out trestle ends with shaped feet: hallmark of commercial Arts and Crafts production.
Horizontal pine backboards secured with wire nails: early twentieth-century cabinet joinery.
Pierced brass strap hinges: decorative medievalist styling favoured in interwar domestic furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Arts and Crafts movement emphasized honest craftsmanship, visible construction details, and natural timber grain. Bureaux from this era feature clean rectilinear lines, hand-crafted ironmongery, leaded glass panes, and minimal surface carving in favour of highlighting the inherent figure of the wood.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as English oak, frequently cut to display quarter-sawn ray flakes. Decorative elements were routinely fashioned from beaten copper or brass straps, alongside lead came glazing.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original mortise and tenon joinery, and natural ageing or light oxidisation on metal hardware. Look for characteristic quarter-sawn oak grain patterns and genuine leaded glass panels held by solder joints rather than modern simulated grilles.

An antique oak bureau functions well as a compact home office solution within a living room, bedroom alcove, or wide hallway. Pair the dark timber with neutral wall colours, contemporary task lighting, and simple ceramic accessories to balance historical character with modern functionality.

Maintain the timber by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing along the direction of the grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources or damp environments to prevent wood movement, and clean leaded glass panes gently using a dry microfibre cloth.
