This late Victorian telescopic propelling pencil dates from circa 1900 and comes in silver and amber colours, fashioned from sterling silver and glass. The hexagonal barrel displays hand-engraved foliate scrolls running along the sides, paired with an ornate slider button near the tip and a faceted orange-amber glass stone set into the crown-like finial at the end. Hallmarks stamped on the exterior read "STERLING", while the telescopic mechanism allows the instrument to extend from a retracted length of 10cm to 13cm. In a contemporary home, this pocket writing instrument suits a gentleman's library or office desk, serving as a functional accessory or decorative item for a writing table. The piece shows polished metal surfaces alongside decorative mouldings and traditional engraving work, complete with a screw-off end cap housing the coloured glass terminal.

FAQs

Developed during the nineteenth century, mechanical propelling pencils offered a reusable alternative to traditional wooden pencils by utilising an internal mechanism to advance graphite lead. Craftspeople often adorned these items with elaborate engraving and stone finials, turning functional stationery into personal status accessories.

Victorian mechanical pencils were predominantly constructed from sterling silver, gold, silver plate, or vulcanite. The decorative finials frequently incorporated cut glass, amber, quartz, bloodstone, or amethyst set into cast or hand-chased metal mounts.

Authentic antique silver propelling pencils usually feature hallmarks or standard marks, such as STERLING, a lion passant, or maker initials stamped on the barrel. Period-appropriate details include hand-engraved scrollwork, smooth mechanical rotation, and natural surface patina around the mechanism.

Small antique writing accessories can be displayed on an office desk alongside leather desk pads, brass stationery trays, or within glass display cases. They also serve as decorative accents when placed atop open journals or books on a library table.

Clean the silver barrel gently using a soft cotton cloth and a specialised silver polishing compound, avoiding harsh abrasives that could wear down delicate engraving. Keep moisture away from the internal lead mechanism and avoid submerging glass finials in liquid cleaners.
