Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th-century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Gillow & Co.

was originally founded in Lancaster in 1730. Gillow’s of Lancaster was a household name in Victorian Britain, and the firm exported furniture throughout the Empire. Key to the company’s success was the dynamic father and son team at its core.

The London branch was opened in 1775. Among Gillow’s most successful pieces during this period were those made in the Neoclassical style from original drawings by Robert Adam. In the period 1813-1820, the Gillow family gradually withdrew from personal involvement with the business.

In 1897, Gillow & Co. merged with a Liverpool firm, and they henceforth traded as Waring & Gillow.

Old ink stains across the drawer bottoms: many decades of regular desk use.
Moulded top edge with rounded corners: cabinet design standard in the 1830s.

This George IV partners library writing table is a nineteenth-century desk in flame mahogany, leather and brass, with a warm brown colour and a green leather top. It stands on four turned and fluted tapering legs with brass castors, and has six frieze drawers fitted with wooden knob handles, locks and tasseled keys. The top has a hand-tooled, gilded impressed border around the inset green leather surface, and the wood displays a prominent flame figure. The dimensions are 78 cm high, 154 cm wide and 110 cm deep. Finished on all sides for freestanding placement, it functions well as a centrepiece in a study, library or home office. Two people can sit opposite one another to work, write or organise correspondence using the six drawers.

A George IV partners desk is a double-sided writing table produced during the reign of King George IV, between 1820 and 1830. Designed for two people to work opposite one another, it incorporates working drawers on both sides of the apron.

Period 19th-century library tables are predominantly crafted from flame mahogany timber, featuring oak-lined drawer construction, hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, and brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit early 19th-century construction details, including hand-cut dovetail joints on oak drawer linings, turned fluted leg legs, period brass castors, and natural age-related patina on the timber.

Position the table as a central focal point in a home office or study. Complement the dark mahogany timber with clean-lined contemporary seating, structured desk lighting, and neutral wall tones to create visual balance.

Maintain the mahogany by dusting with a microfiber cloth and applying natural beeswax polish periodically along the grain. Keep the leather surface free of moisture and apply a specialised leather conditioner to maintain flexibility.
