FAQs

Toleware refers to decorative objects crafted from painted, lacquered, or enamelled sheet metal, typically tin or iron. Chinoiserie toleware features European artistic interpretations of East Asian landscapes, figures, and botanical motifs, which gained immense popularity from the eighteenth century through the early twentieth century.

Traditional tole lamps were constructed using rolled sheet iron or tinplate that was shaped, soldered, and finished with a dark ground coat of paint or lacquer. Decorative scenes were applied using gilding and enamel paints before being sealed with a protective varnish.

Authentic pieces generally display subtle surface craquelure, natural paint wear along high-contact edges, and original solder joins inside the canister. Older conversions may retain original tea caddy lids or rolled metal rims beneath modern electrical brass fittings.

A Chinoiserie tole lamp works well positioned on a wooden sideboard, console table, or bedside chest to add visual weight and warm accent lighting. Combining the detailed lacquer base with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a balanced contrast between traditional craft and modern silhouettes.

Clean painted toleware gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid using abrasive polish, water, or chemical solvents, as these can strip delicate gilding, painted details, and protective lacquer layers.
