Pair of Chinese Armorial Porcelain Plates, Redman Family of Norfolk, Circa 1795

18th century
Description

Pair of Chinese Armorial Porcelain Plates, Redman Family of Norfolk, circa 1795

An attractive and unusual pair of late 18th-century Chinese export armorial porcelain plates, decorated with the coat of arms of the Redman family of Norfolk, England, dating to circa 1795.

These fine Chinese armorial plates were produced for the European export market during the Qianlong period and are particularly appealing examples of English family armorial porcelain commissioned from China in the late Georgian era.

Each plate is beautifully decorated to the centre with an impressive Redman family coat of arms, finely painted in red, gold and white enamel. The heraldic decoration is surrounded by an elaborate border of interlocking gilt chain links, framed by deep blue enamel detailing to both the inner and outer edges.

The outer rim of each plate is further embellished with fine red and gilt lines against a rich blue enamel ground, creating an elegant and well-balanced decorative scheme. Of particular note is the beautifully executed heraldic horse's head, which is especially well painted on both plates and demonstrates the quality of the enamel decoration.

A highly decorative and increasingly sought-after form of 18th-century Chinese export porcelain, armorial plates such as these were specially commissioned for European families and provide an interesting connection between Chinese porcelain production and British family heraldry.

Condition

Both plates are in excellent condition, with no restoration or damage. They are free from chips, cracks, hairlines and other significant defects.

Dimensions

• Diameter: Approximately 23.8 cm (9⅜ inches).

• Height: Approximately 3.8 cm.

Price: £495.00 for the pair

The price includes shipping within the United Kingdom.

A particularly attractive and unusual pair of late Georgian Chinese armorial plates, suitable for collectors of Chinese export porcelain, English heraldic porcelain and 18th-century decorative antiques.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Unglazed bevelled foot rim: hand-thrown Chinese export porcelain.
Hand-enamelled heraldic crest in iron-red: bespoke painting for the British market.
Gilding rubbed thin on the outer rim: natural wear from use and handling.
Tiny dark iron specks in the glaze: early kiln firing conditions.

Chinese armorial porcelain consists of custom hard-paste ceramic wares manufactured in China during the 17th to 19th centuries specifically for export to Western markets. These items were decorated with hand-painted coats of arms, crests, or monograms belonging to aristocratic families, merchants, and institutions.

Armorial pieces were crafted from kaolin-based hard-paste porcelain fired at high temperatures in Jingdezhen. The heraldic motifs and rim borders were subsequently applied by Cantonese enamellers using overglaze enamel pigments and gold leaf detailing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit a slightly uneven glaze texture often described as orange-peel, along with hand-applied enamel wear, unglazed rim footrings, and slight variations between individual pieces due to manual painting.

These historical plates can be displayed on brass plate stands on a sideboard top, arranged symmetrically on wall hangers inside a dining area, or integrated into an open-shelf cabinet display.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild wash liquid with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, chemical solvents, immersion soaking, and automated dishwashers to protect overglaze gilding and enamels from degradation.
