This Victorian novelty silver double jockey cap tape measure dates from 1890 and reflects the gentleman's library style. Made from sterling silver with a bright silver finish, the piece is designed as a double jockey cap enclosing a blue silk tape measure that extends outwards with handwritten ink marks visible on the fabric. The construction incorporates engraved cap seams, a winder button at the top, and a suspension loop at the rear. Hallmarks are visible on the brim. Measuring 3.5 cm high, 1.8 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep, this diminutive collectible sits easily on an office desk as a small decorative accessory or paperweight. It functions well in a home library or study alongside other small Victorian desk ornaments and sewing accessories.

Victorian novelty silver tape measures were functional sewing tools crafted in whimsical forms, such as equestrian hats or animals, produced during the late 19th century.

These items were typically constructed from sterling silver or silver plate, enclosing a silk or woven fabric ribbon marked with measurements and fitted with an internal spring or manual winder mechanism.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarks denoting silver purity, the assay office mark, date letter, and makers mark, along with period-appropriate hand-chased or engraved construction.

Small novelty silver objects are best displayed inside glass shadow boxes, tabletop curio trays, or arranged alongside books on a study desk.

Gently wipe the silver exterior with a soft microfiber silver polishing cloth, avoiding chemical liquids or immersion that could compromise the fabric tape inside.
