This Edwardian pedestal desk, dating to circa 1915, combines traditional English design with practical storage. Constructed from mahogany, the timber displays a rich reddish-brown colour complemented by a newly fitted dark green leather writing surface with an ornate gilt-tooled border. The rectangular configuration includes nine drawers on the front fitted with brass swan-neck handles and decorative keyhole escutcheons, set above shaped bracket feet, alongside reeded corner pilasters and moulded edges. The desk is 76.5 cm high, 113 cm wide and 57 cm deep, with a knee space measuring 45.5 cm wide by 60 cm high. Equally suited to a traditional study, library or contemporary home office, the piece provides generous workspace and storage while maintaining a relatively compact footprint. The reverse features matching top drawers above plain, panelled lower sections, allowing the furniture to remain visually appealing when viewed from any angle. It is presented in good antique condition, showing the expected marks and signs of age and use associated with a genuine early twentieth-century piece.

Originating in the early 20th century, an Edwardian pedestal desk features two vertical banks of drawers supporting a flat writing surface with a central kneespace. The style often refined Victorian precedents with lighter proportions, flame mahogany veneers, and gilded leather writing surfaces.

High-grade solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, secondary woods like pine or oak for drawer linings, cast brass swan-neck hardware, and inset leather tops decorated with blind or gold tooling are standard for this era of craftsmanship.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut or early machine dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass escutcheons with working locks, age-appropriate patination to the timber, and pedestals constructed to separate from the desktop for transportation.

Place the desk centrally in a home office or study paired with a tailored leather chair, grounding the space with a patterned wool rug and balancing the dark timber with minimalist brass desk lighting and modern artwork.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage, nourish the wood with a natural beeswax polish twice annually, and wipe the leather inset with a damp cloth followed by a specialized leather conditioner.
