This is a 19th-century Tibetan bronze statue of Buddha depicting the figure in a classic seated and crossed-leg pose on a double lotus base. The piece is cast from a warm bronze copper alloy and finished with a rich antique patina. Fine details include chased patterned drapery over the robes, an ushnisha head spire, and the earth-touching bhumisparsha mudra with the right hand resting towards the ground. The statue measures 27 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 16 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this substantial sculptural object brings a calm focal point to interior settings. The substantial weight of 4 kg grounds the figure securely on flat surfaces, making it well-suited for display within living spaces or studies. The surface shows gentle wear and varied tones from years of handling, highlighting the crisp casting of the facial features, drapery patterns, and the petals of the tiered lotus throne below.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century Tibetan metal sculptures typically feature iconography derived from Vajrayana Buddhism, including detailed robes, stylized hair, lotus pedestals, and specific ritual hand gestures known as mudras.

These figures were traditionally created using the lost-wax casting process (cire perdue), where copper alloy or bronze was poured into a hand-carved wax mold, resulting in detailed surface decoration and hollow bases.

Authenticity is evaluated by observing hand-chased surface details, natural wear to gilding or patination, the presence of casting seams or core remnants inside the hollow base, and signs of age-related oxidisation.

A substantial bronze figure serves as a focal accent on sideboards, mantelpieces, or bookshelves, contrasting structured contemporary furniture with sculptural warmth and texture.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or water, which can strip the natural aged patina.
