This George V desk accessory from 1920 is a silver and glass stamp moistener designed for a gentleman's library. The rectangular silver frame has bracket feet at the corners and dark brown tortoiseshell panels inset on the sides, housing a removable clear glass reservoir and a cylindrical glass roller with a bevelled rim. The silver frame displays a very small score from age and use, alongside clear hallmarks on the metal. It measures 5 cm high, 5 cm wide, and 4.2 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this small antique sits on an office desk or a study table to hold water in the reservoir, with the rotating glass barrel used to moisten the adhesive on stamps. The piece functions both as a historical desk accessory and a display item for an antique collection, adding period character to a workspace.

A stamp moistener is a desktop accessory designed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to dampen adhesive postage stamps or envelope flaps using a rotating cylinder mounted over a small water reservoir.

These utility items were predominantly manufactured using cast clear or opaque glass rollers supported by brass, cast iron, sterling silver, or tortoiseshell frames and reservoirs.

Authentic British George V pieces carry official hallmark stamps, including the lion passant for sterling silver, a city assay mark, a date letter between 1910 and 1936, and a registered makers mark.

Display the piece on a contemporary executive office desk, atop a stack of vintage linen notebooks, or alongside stationery accessories in a gentlemans library setting.

Lift out the glass roller to wash gently with mild soap and water, while using a specialized silver polishing cloth on the metal frame to prevent tarnishing without damaging delicate tortoiseshell inserts.
