Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Brass castors stamped Cope and Collinson Patent: documented makers of the nineteenth century.
Slotted screws securing the castor cups: traditional hand fastening.
Turned and fluted tapering legs: classic table form for the era.
Gilt-tooled leather insert: uneven darkening and surface marks from long use.
Mellow edges on the mahogany mouldings: smooth wear from handling over generations.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early nineteenth century Victorian writing table is constructed from warm brown mahogany with a leather inset writing top and brass hardware. The piece stands on turned reeded legs fitted with brass castors and features two frieze drawers with round brass ring handles, keyholes, and moulded drawer edges. The rectangular timber top includes a bordered inset writing surface and a moulded edge around the perimeter. The table measures 72 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, providing a compact surface for work or correspondence. Placed in a study, library, or home office, it functions as a practical writing desk while adding traditional nineteenth century character to the room.

Writing tables gained widespread popularity during the 19th century as literacy expanded and personal correspondence increased. Victorian designs typically feature solid hardwood construction, inset leather writing surfaces, and frieze drawers supported by turned or reeded legs.

High-grade mahogany, walnut, and rosewood were the primary timbers used for 19th-century writing tables. Writing surfaces were frequently inlaid with gold-tooled leather, while drawer fittings and castors were typically cast from brass.

Authentic period desks show hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, original brass castors, and natural wear patterns on the underside and drawer runners. The leather inset often exhibits historic patination or tooling consistent with age.

An antique writing table can serve as a functional laptop desk in a modern study or act as a focal console table in a hallway. Pair it with contemporary task lighting or streamlined seating to create a balanced interior aesthetic.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the mahogany. The leather surface should be treated with a specialised leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
