Large Heavy 98g Indian Silver Deity Offering Serving Spoon C1880 Antique Snakes

19th century
Description

A rare and unusual heavy solid silver Indian antique offering or serving spoon. It is unmarked but test as high grade silver. I would date it to c1880. It has been unusually designed with the base of the stem being in the form of two birds and the terminal in the form of a deity behind this are snakes. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits and repairs. It measures approx. 7 inches (18cm) long by 1.75 inches (4.3cm) wide and weighs 98 grams. A very unusual example.

Date of Manufacture

The Silver Squirrel has dated this Indian Silver Offering Spoon to the 1880s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Cast deity under a hooded snake canopy: Indian silverwork from the colonial era.
Hand chasing across the stem and snakes: work done before modern casting shortcuts.
Wash of gilding surviving inside the bowl: original finish protected within the fluting.
Dark oxidisation deep in the chasing: long-settled silver tarnish.
Softening on the deity's knees and face: gentle handling over decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large and heavy solid silver Indian offering or serving spoon dates from c1880 during the nineteenth century. The piece comprises a shell-shaped bowl, a twisted stem decorated with chased patterns, a collar with two birds at the base of the handle, and a terminal depicting a deity framed by a naga serpent hood. The surface displays a polished silver colour with dark patination in the recesses. The item measures 18 cm long by 4.3 cm wide and weighs 98 grams. In a modern interior, this item suits placement on a sideboard top as a decorative cabinet piece or serving accessory. The heavy silver construction shows no dents, splits, or repairs.

An Indian silver offering spoon is a ceremonial utensil traditionally crafted for Hindu religious worship and temple rituals. These items were designed to handle sacred liquids, rice, or incense during devotional ceremonies.

Spoons from this period were typically hand-forged or cast using high-purity silver, often embellished with repousse and chasing techniques to create detailed sculptural figures, sacred motifs, and textured stems.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic hand-chased ornamentation, regional design styles such as Swami or Cutch patterns, structural hand-hammering marks, and regional or maker hallmarks rather than standard British silver marks.

These decorative metal objects are commonly mounted on custom stands inside display cabinets, arranged in shadow boxes, or styled alongside books and trays on tabletops.

Silver pieces should be dusted regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and polished gently using specialized silver cream when necessary. Avoiding abrasive chemicals and storing items in low-humidity environments prevents excessive tarnishing.
