Antique Victorian Maple & Co. Inlaid Writing Desk or Dressing Table

19th century
Description

An exceptional antique Victorian Maple & Co. inlaid writing desk of outstanding quality, beautifully crafted with exquisite satinwood inlay, richly figured timber and original engraved brass fittings. This elegant freestanding desk combines superior Victorian craftsmanship with remarkable versatility, making it equally suitable as a ladies' writing desk, dressing table or bedroom vanity.

The beautifully designed upper section features two raised compartments with shaped hinged lids opening to reveal useful stationery and storage space. Beneath are decorative inlaid drawer fronts, one incorporating a functioning drawer, all retaining their original ornate brass handles. The compartments are enhanced by magnificent pierced brass galleries and joined by a decorative central panel with exquisite floral inlay.

The generously proportioned top retains its original green leather writing surface with decorative gilt-tooled borders, beautifully complementing the rich colour of the timber. Below are seven drawers, each decorated with fine satinwood stringing and retaining its original engraved brass handle. The central drawer features particularly attractive floral and ribbon inlay.

The desk stands on eight elegant square tapering legs with delicate satinwood inlay, terminating in original brass cup castors. The quality of the construction, beautifully finished sides and graceful proportions make this a particularly impressive example of fine Victorian cabinetmaking.

Maple & Co. were among Britain's most prestigious furniture manufacturers, renowned for exceptional craftsmanship, elegant design and superior quality. This splendid example beautifully demonstrates the firm's attention to detail and decorative excellence.

Although originally designed as a writing desk, its elegant proportions and numerous storage compartments make it a wonderful alternative to a traditional antique dressing table or American vanity table. Perfect for a luxurious bedroom, dressing room, study or contemporary interior, where its magnificent inlay and rich colour would create a striking focal point.

This late Victorian Sheraton Revival writing desk originates from 19th-century England and is attributed to Maple & Co. Constructed from rosewood, mahogany and satinwood with brass and leather elements, the dark brown timber displays rich figuring alongside contrasting satinwood marquetry inlay, stringing, and floral and ribbon motifs. The upper section incorporates pierced brass gallery rails atop two raised compartments, a decorative central panel, and seven drawers fitted with original engraved drop-handle hardware. The main writing surface has a green tooled leather insert with gilt borders, and the piece is supported by eight square tapered legs on brass cup castors. The desk measures 94 cm high, 104 cm wide and 53 cm deep. It functions effectively as a ladies' writing desk, dressing table or bedroom vanity, and fits comfortably into a study, bedroom or dressing room in a home today.

Victorian inlaid writing desks feature detailed decorative wood marquetry or parquetry, often incorporating contrasting timbers like satinwood or boxwood set into rich mahogany or rosewood frameworks. These pieces frequently feature raised side drawers, brass galleries, and leather-lined writing surfaces designed for personal correspondence.

Late 19th-century writing desks commonly utilised hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut for the primary structure, complimented by satinwood, ebony, or fruitwood inlays. Functional hardware typically included cast brass drop handles, stamped brass galleries, and gilt-tooled leather writing inserts.

Authentic late Victorian desks often feature maker stamps or metal plaques inside drawers or on drawer top edges bearing manufacturer names such as Maple & Co. Look for hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass castors, genuine brass locks, and aged gilt tooling along the leather writing surface.

Position an antique inlaid desk in a study, foyer, or bedroom nook alongside contemporary seating or minimalist lighting to create balanced contrast. The dark timber tones and ornate brass details serve as a clear focal point against neutral walls or decorative panelling.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain to preserve the timber. Protect the inlaid marquetry and leather writing pad from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or leather cracking.
