This Carolean style desk or bureau plat from 1910 is constructed in solid dark brown oak with brass hardware. The piece measures 78.5 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 87.5 cm deep, providing a spacious surface with a moulded edge and canted corners above four drawers arranged around a central kneehole. The drawer fronts display geometric mouldings fitted with small brass drop handles, while the central apron features an intricate scroll-carved and pierced design. The structure stands on barley-twist legs at both the front and rear, terminating in large ball and claw feet and united by a lower bobbin-turned stretcher base. The side panels and back incorporate carved and moulded decoration, and the drawers contain solid oak linings accompanied by keys for the working locks. Placed in a gentleman's library or study, this desk functions as a practical writing table or workspace suitable for daily use.

Jacobean Revival furniture, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reinterprets 17th-century English woodwork. Key characteristics include heavy oak construction, dark finishes, geometric panel mouldings, foliage carving, and turned spiral or barley-twist legs.

Desks from this period were primarily built using solid oak or oak veneers over pine frames. Secondary drawers often featured oak or pine linings, secured with hand-cut or early machine dovetail joinery, accompanied by cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces from circa 1910 exhibit precise dovetail joints in the drawer construction, original brass keyholes or drop handles, natural wood shrinkage on back panels, and aged patination across areas of high contact.

A dark oak desk provides visual weight when placed against neutral walls in a home office or study. Pairing the piece with mid-century or modern leather seating balances historical detailing with clean contemporary lines.

Dust the wood surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to maintain moisture in the timber. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to avoid warping or uneven fading.
