This early eighteenth-century Georgian silver bodkin is a delicate sewing implement designed for threading ribbon or cord through hems and eyelets. The plain silver piece has a cool metallic grey colour and an unpolished finish, displaying visible signs of age including surface tarnish, fine scratches, and a slight distortion at the pointed tip caused by historical use. Distinctive details include engraved initials near the top, a slotted eyelet, and a small terminal pinhole at the very end of the shaft. Measuring 9.5 cm in length, the slim, tapered shaft rests flat against a smooth, pale surface. Today, this antique implement serves as a decorative cabinet display piece or a collectable curiosity for anyone interested in historical sewing tools and Georgian metalwork. It makes a subtle addition to a collector cabinet, a specialist display case, or a desktop vignette, bringing a touch of domestic history to an interior.

A silver bodkin is a flat, blunt-pointed needle used historically to thread ribbons, tapes, or cords through corsets, bodices, and casing in period clothing and linens.

While brass, bone, and steel were common for everyday use, silver was preferred for high-quality bodkins due to its durability and non-staining properties when working with fine textiles.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-hammered silver construction, subtle surface wear, engraved owner initials or makers marks, and a characteristic slotted eye alongside a small round terminal hole.

These small silver implements are frequently mounted inside glass-fronted shadow frames, arranged on velvet-lined trays within display cabinets, or styled alongside historic textiles.

To preserve historic silver, clean gently using a soft cotton cloth with mild silver polish, avoiding abrasive compounds that could erode faint surface engraving or historic oxidisation.
