This early twentieth century Queen Anne style writing table is formed from warm brown walnut with a figured grain and aged patina. The breakfront shape incorporates a long central drawer above a carved shell motif on the lower apron, flanked by two end drawers, all fitted with pierced brass basket handles. The top edge is moulded, and the drawer fronts display crossbanding with herringbone banding, while the whole stands on cabriole legs ending in carved pad feet. The table measures 83 cm high, 151 cm wide, and 56.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, the piece serves as a functional desk in a study or home office, or functions as a console table in a hallway or a dressing table in a bedroom. The traditional form and rich timber tones integrate smoothly into English country house interiors, providing a practical writing surface with generous legroom beneath the recessed centre.

FAQs

Queen Anne style furniture emerged in the early 18th century during the reign of Queen Anne of Great Britain. It is characterised by graceful proportions, curved silhouettes, cabriole legs, pad or claw feet, and light decorative motifs such as carved scallop shells.

Craftsmen predominantly used walnut, incorporating figured or burr walnut veneers applied over solid timber frames. Decorative brass fittings, including chased or pierced backplate handles and keyhole escutcheons, were standard hardware components.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved details like apron shells, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and natural patination on the timber. Look for original brass drop handles, cabriole legs, and walnut crossbanding around drawer fronts.

Position the desk against a neutral painted wall to highlight the rich walnut grain. Pair it with a contemporary desk lamp and a tailored leather or upholstered chair to contrast historical craftsmanship with modern elements.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, wiping in the direction of the grain, and keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber drying.
