Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century antique French small sofa has an upholstered cream fabric body with deep button tufting across the rounded backrest and thick seat cushion. The rolled arms curve outward with decorative brass tack detailing along the edges, and the exposed wooden frame rests on dark polished cabriole legs. Wear is visible on the wooden base below the upholstery, showing natural ageing of the timber structure. The piece measures 70 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 58 cm deep, with a seat depth of 43 cm. In a modern home, this compact seating option fits well in a living room, bedroom, or reading corner as an accent piece.

FAQs

A French canape is a traditional multi-seater upholstered bench or sofa that gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, often featuring sculpted wooden frames and carved cabriole legs.

Traditional construction relied on solid timber frames, typically walnut or beech, lined with natural fillings such as horsehair and coconut fibre, backed by hand-tied steel coil springs and linen or calico fabrics.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved timber details, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, original upholstery tacks, and evidence of wear along the lower wooden frame and leg terminals.

Positioning a French settee alongside modern minimalist side tables or neutral architectural features creates a textured contrast that bridges classical design and contemporary interior schemes.

Vacuum natural fabric upholstery gently using a low-suction attachment, keep the wood frame away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, and apply clear beeswax to exposed timber periodically.
