Delightful Oak Single Drawer Side Table Desk 1930s

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

A rather delightful little English oak correspondence desk which would slot into most spaces in the home with its useful long single drawer - we are thinking hallway, living room or home office space.

The look is classically straightforward with some great use of oak tones and grains. We have a long single drawer sitting on slender legs and a small writing surface with 4 little doors opening to storage space for letters and the like - all rather delightful.

Condition is good with sensible day to day wear - nothing nasty. We have ensured the piece is ready for placing.

Something a little different, likely a one off, c1930s.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

This 1930s English correspondence desk is made from warm brown quartersawn oak with a clean grain and visible natural growth rings. The compact piece stands on slender square legs joined by an H-stretcher base and incorporates a single long drawer fitted with two small round wooden knob handles. Above the work surface sits a tiered upper cabinet with two small central cupboard doors that open to reveal storage compartments, flanked by two side fold-out door sections fitted with tiny round wooden knobs and brass hinges. The timber displays consistent day-to-day wear across its polished surfaces. Measuring 98 cm in overall height, 87 cm in width, and 40.5 cm in depth, with a writing surface height of 73 cm, the desk functions as a practical writing table or small workstation. It suits placement in a hallway, living room, or home office space to hold letters, stationery, and small accessories while occupying minimal floor space.

Furniture from the 1930s in Britain often reflects a balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern utility, featuring compact footprints, geometric forms, and rich native timbers such as oak and walnut.

Desks from this era were typically built using solid oak or quartersawn oak veneers, featuring hand-cut or machine-cut dovetail drawer joints, turned or square legs, and sturdy H-stretchers for stability.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate construction, such as wooden knob handles, original brass hinges, natural patina, and distinct quartersawn oak ray patterns within the timber grain.

A compact oak desk functions well as a dedicated writing station in a bedroom corner, a statement console table in a hallway, or a streamlined workstation in a modern home office.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year, while avoiding direct exposure to central heating sources or long periods of sunlight.
