This Neoclassical sculpture depicts a recumbent sleeping lion resting its head on an integrated rectangular base. Dating from the early 20th century and created in the style of Antonio Canova, the piece takes the form of a large dark brown patinated bronze figure showing a detailed mane moulding. The subject lies stretched out with its eyes closed, front paws crossed beneath its head, and a heavy textured mane framing the face. Measuring 14 cm high by 34 cm wide and 13 cm deep, the sculpture is substantial enough to anchor a display surface effectively. Ideal for placement in a gentleman's library or office desk setting, the substantial metalwork brings traditional sculptural form to interior schemes. The dark metallic tone integrates easily into existing decorative arrangements on mantelpieces, sideboards, or bookshelves, providing a classic focal point in domestic spaces.

Recumbent lions of this design are modelled after the famous monumental marble lions sculpted by Antonio Canova in 1792 for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St Peters Basilica, Rome. Reduced bronze versions became popular grand tour souvenirs and decorative desktop items throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

These sculptures were typically cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method. Once cast, artisans hand-chased the metal to define details such as the mane and claws, followed by applying chemical patination to achieve dark brown or reddish tones.

Authentic castings display crisp hand-chased detail, substantial weight appropriate to solid or thick-walled metal, and natural wear to the patina on raised surfaces. Later cold-cast resin or spelter imitations lack the distinct metallic resonance, weight, and smooth oxidisation of real bronze.

Positioning a heavy bronze sculpture on a dark timber executive desk, a marble fireplace mantelpiece, or alongside bound volumes on a bookcase adds architectural grounding and historical weight to modern or traditional interiors.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a natural bristle brush. To preserve the protective patina, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently, avoiding chemical metal polishes or abrasive cleaners.
