Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

These figures are scaled reproductions of the famous ancient Roman bronze discovered in 1830 at the House of the Faun in Pompeii. Wealthy European travellers on the Grand Tour during the 18th and 19th centuries acquired such classical casts as scholarly souvenirs to showcase education and refined taste.

Makers predominantly used plaster of Paris or bronze for these classical replicas. Plaster figures were frequently coated with bronzing powders, dark wax, or paint finishes to accurately imitate the aged, patinated appearance of ancient excavated bronzes.
