Antique Silver Pocket Watch, Kings Lynn

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver pocket watch, Kings Lynn.

The watch has a stem-winding ¾ plate movement which is working nicely. The movement carries the wording, ‘Exam’d by W J King of Kings Lynn’. William Johnson King was a notable historic watchmaker, jeweller, and clockmaker who operated in King's Lynn, Norfolk during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He had premises at various addresses in the High Street in Kings Lynn. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 46mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is 935 silver, so slightly purer than sterling, and it has Continental silver marks inside both of the case backs.. The case is in good condition, just a little unevenness to the back and the odd minor mark.

The glass lens is in lovely condition.

The dial is in lovely condition with pin-set blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

This Victorian open-face pocket watch dates from 1900 and is made from 935 silver, offering a slightly purer silver content than sterling. The piece has a polished silver-coloured finish, a fluted winding crown, and a clear glass lens protecting the dial. Inside, the stem-winding three-quarter plate movement carries the inscription 'Exam’d by W J King of Kings Lynn', referencing the noted Norfolk watchmaker and jeweller William Johnson King, and is housed behind an inner hinged cover with Continental silver marks inside the case backs. The white enamel dial displays black Roman numerals, pin-set blued steel hands, an outer minute track, and a subsidiary seconds dial at the base. The case measures 46mm in diameter, excluding the winding stem and loop. This timepiece is suitable for display within a gentleman's library or collection.

An open-face pocket watch features a case without a protective metal cover over the dial, allowing the time to be read directly through the glass crystal. Historically popular during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these timepieces were standard issue for railway officials and everyday personal wear.

Traditional silver pocket watches consist of a sterling silver or coin silver case housing a mechanical movement, paired with an enamel dial fired onto a copper base plate. The dial markings are typically painted, while the hands are rendered in blued or blackened steel protected by a glass crystal.

Authentic pieces feature hallmark stamps inside the case back indicating the silver purity, assay office, date letter, and makers mark. Additional hallmarks or serial numbers on the movement and dial further confirm age and origin.

A pocket watch can be displayed on a dedicated brass or wooden pocket watch stand placed on a desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece. Alternatively, it can be styled under a small glass cloche as part of a curated vignette of historical objects.

The silver case should be gently wiped with a soft, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding chemical dips that could seep into the mechanism. The inner movement requires periodic servicing by a qualified horologist to keep the lubricants fresh and ensure mechanical functionality.
