Antique Silver Record Pocket Watch, 1918

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver Record pocket watch, 1918.

The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement has been identified as by the Record Watch Company. It is all protected by an inner hinged cover which is engraved with the initials RWL with the date of 29 Dec 1921.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both case backs for London 1918 with a sponsor’s mark for Arthur Rendell.

In 1907, an act came into force which meant that all imported watches had to be assayed in a UK assay office and marked with British import hallmarks. For this, a sponsor's mark was required. In this particular case, Arthur Rendell was an employee, and probably in charge, of the department that handled imported watches at a company called Pringles, the UK's largest wholesalers of jewellery, silverware, clocks and watches, so it was deemed relevant to use his initials.

The case is in good condition, just the occasional small mark but nothing too detrimental at all.

The acrylic lens is in lovely condition. There is a short scratch to the inner bezel underneath the lens but you have to look quite closely to see it.

The dial is in lovely condition with blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

This Edwardian open-face pocket watch dates from the 1910 period and is constructed from silver, enamel, and glass with a polished silver finish. The timepiece displays a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, an outer minute track, blued steel hands, and a subsidiary seconds sub-dial at the six o'clock position. At the top sits a round, ribbed winding stem and a suspension loop. Inside, the case bears hallmarks for London 1918 alongside a sponsor's mark, while the inner hinged cover shows engraved initials and a date. The clear glass lens reveals a short scratch to the inner bezel beneath it, and the exterior case exhibits occasional small marks. Measuring 50 mm in diameter excluding the winding stem and loop, this pocket watch fits neatly into a gentlemans library setting. It functions as a decorative tabletop piece or a collectible display item, lending a traditional gentleman's study aesthetic to a home interior. The watch sits securely on a transparent stand for presentation purposes, accompanied by a new presentation box.

An open-face pocket watch features a dial without a protective metal cover, allowing the wearer to read the time directly. During the early 20th century, these timepieces were standard for personal and official use, featuring top-winding crowns and clear numerical markers.

Pocket watch cases from this period were typically crafted from solid sterling silver or silver plate, housing a mechanical movement behind a white vitreous enamel dial with black glass crystal protection.

Authentic pieces generally display official silver hallmarks inside the case back, indicating the metal purity, assay office, and date letter, alongside maker marks such as those from the Record Watch Company.

A pocket watch can be worn traditionally in a waistcoat pocket attached to an Albert chain, or placed on a dedicated desk stand as a functional decorative object.

Mechanical pocket watches should be wound regularly without over-winding and serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years to clean and lubricate the movement.
