1930s Silver Kendal & Dent Pocket Watch

1930s silver Kendal & Dent pocket watch.

The watch has a Moeris calibre 19C stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The inner cover is engraved, ‘Presented to C E Moat, from his colleagues at Cannon St, May 1939’. In the 1930s, Cannon Street was a major commercial hub in the City of London home to numerous banks, railway offices, commodity brokers, and trading firms and the Cannon Street Hotel. It may well be that the watch was presented if Mr Moat was leaving to sign up. Records indicate that he was living in London in 1945.

The watch measures 47mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the back covers for Birmingham 1938, with a maker’s mark for Aaron Dennison, the English watch case maker.

The movement would have been imported from Switzerland, then cased in the UK (often to avoid import duties on precious metals) and then labelled to be sold under the Kendal & Dent name.

The case is in good condition, just a couple of small areas of unevenness to the back, not too detrimental at all.

The glass lens is in lovely condition.

The dial is signed with the name of the original retailer, Kendal & Dent, London, prominent watch and clock retailers, jewellers and goldsmiths. The dial is in lovely condition with original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
