1938 Silver Cyma Pocket Watch for J W Benson

1920 - 1940
Description

1938 silver Cyma pocket watch for J W Benson.

The watch has an adjusted 16-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the name of the original retailer, J W Benson. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has a couple of pin prick dents.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for London 1938, with a sponsor’s mark for J W Benson. The case has a couple of small marks to the side, and some unevenness to the back.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The signed dial looks super to the naked eye… through a jeweller’s loupe there is a short very faint hairline by number 3. Original hands.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pocket watches from this period often bridge late Art Deco design and functional utilitarianism, featuring clean typographical dials, simplified Arabic numerals, slim profiles, and reliable precision Swiss movements.

The casings were typically crafted from solid sterling silver or silver alloys, paired with protective mineral glass crystals and vitreous enamel dials featuring painted indices.

Authentic pieces generally feature hallmarked inner case backs detailing silver purity, assay office marks, maker signatures, and serial numbers matching the era of the mechanical movement.

A pocket watch can be showcased under a glass cloche dome, mounted on a dedicated brass watch stand, or styled flat inside an open valet tray alongside other horological collectables.

Mechanical watches require regular gentle winding, periodic servicing by a professional watchmaker, protection from moisture, and occasional light polishing of the silver casing with a soft lint-free cloth.
