Antique Silver Cyma Pocket Watch for J W Benson

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver Cyma pocket watch for J W Benson.

The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel stem-winding movement, Cyma reference 939, which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the name of the original high end retailer, J W Benson. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both case backs for Birmingham 1912 together with a case maker’s mark for Aaron Dennison, the English case maker and supplier to various watch makers. The case is in good condition, just the odd small mark but nothing serious at all. The original owner’s initials have been beautifully engraved on the back of the watch.

The main face of the glass lens is in lovely condition. A few small nibbles to the bevelled edge.

The signed dial is in lovely condition with original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

This Edwardian pocket watch is an open-face timepiece in silver, enamel, glass, steel, and brass, styled for a gentleman's library. The silver case holds a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial, an outer minute track, and blued steel hands. A ribbed gold-coloured onion crown sits above the case alongside a polished silver loop. The face features black lettering reading J W Benson London above the centre, with Swiss made written near the bottom edge. The case has a smooth silver finish and a hinged construction, housing a stem-winding movement with hallmarks for Birmingham 1912 and a maker's mark for Aaron Dennison. Measuring 50 mm in diameter excluding the winding crown and loop, the watch is suitable for display on a desk, within a cabinet, or as part of a portable collection of historical timepieces. It functions as a decorative object for a study or office shelf when not carried in a pocket.

J.W. Benson was a prominent London watchmaker founded in the 19th century, holding royal warrants and producing high-grade timepieces. While manufacturing took place in England and Switzerland, Benson retailed precision watches across the British Empire.

Antique pocket watches commonly featured solid silver, gold, or nickel cases combined with vitreous enamel dials. Internal components utilised brass, steel, and synthetic rubies or jewels to minimise movement friction.

Authentic period timepieces feature stamped silver hallmarks or manufacturer marks inside the case back. Dial typography, blued steel hands, and matching movement serial numbers further confirm authenticity.

Pocket watches can be mounted on a dedicated glass dome watch stand or displayed on a desk pocket watch hanger. They also serve as decorative accents when set inside glass-topped shadow boxes alongside period accessories.

Keep the timepiece in a dry environment to prevent moisture from tarnishing the case or oxidising internal components. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a professional horologist to clean and oil the gear train.
