This Victorian pocket watch albert chain dates from 1890 and is fashioned from 18ct rolled gold with a polished yellow finish. The piece comprises a double curb link chain fitted with a central T-bar, a swivel clasp, a bolt ring, and a suspended wax seal fob featuring a green oval bloodstone. The stone displays an intaglio carving of a dancing figure alongside chips to the edge. A small stamped link near the clasp carries the inscription stating the metal standard. In a contemporary interior, this traditional gentleman's library accessory serves as a decorative display item or can be integrated into personal jewellery collections. The chains measure 22 cm and 23 cm in length, whilst the fob stands at 22 mm high with a flat surface measuring 20 mm by 10 mm.

Named after Prince Albert, the Albert chain became popular during the Victorian era as a practical and ornamental accessory for securing pocket watches to waistcoats. The T-bar slips through a waistcoat buttonhole, anchoring the watch in a pocket while displaying decorative links and suspended fobs.

Victorian watch chains were constructed from solid gold, rolled gold, pinchbeck, and sterling silver. Fobs attached to these chains often featured carved gemstones such as bloodstone, carnelian, and onyx, or detailed wax seal intaglios.

Authentic period pieces exhibit wear patterns consistent with age, particularly where links rub together. Look for makers marks, metal quality stamps on the T-bar or swivel clasps, and Victorian-style construction techniques such as hand-carved stone intaglios and solid curb links.

In modern fashion, Albert chains are frequently re-purposed as statement necklaces or layered bracelets. The decorative T-bar and attached intaglio fobs serve as central focal points when worn on contemporary chains or clothing.

Clean rolled gold gently with a soft microfibre cloth to avoid stripping the outer gold layer. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, especially on set gemstones like bloodstone, and store the item in a dry, soft-lined jewellery box.
