Antique Edwardian Arts & Crafts Mahogany Sideboard | Bow Front

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century Edwardian sideboard in mahogany, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality with strong Arts & Crafts influence, showcasing fine craftsmanship throughout.

The sideboard offers excellent storage, with two frieze drawers across the bow front above a pair of panelled cupboard doors. Behind the doors there is a shelf to one side and a shelf with a fitted inner drawer to the other. The drawers are fitted with decorative brass pear drop handles and the doors with matching brass escutcheons.

The moulded top sits above a breakfront case with fielded panels to the corners, fluted pilasters and a central panel with a carved patera beneath stylised brackets. The doors feature arched panels, and the piece stands on a shaped apron between arched block feet, all typical of the Arts & Crafts period.

The mahogany displays a lovely figured grain and a warm, rich colour, particularly to the top and the sides.

Presented in good condition. A very desirable Edwardian sideboard of unusual design, perfect for any dining room, living room or hallway.

This Edwardian Arts and Crafts sideboard is made from dark brown mahogany with a warm, rich colour and a figured grain. The bow-front piece measures 95 cm high, 152.5 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. It has a moulded top, two frieze drawers fitted with brass pear drop handles, fluted pilasters, fielded corner panels, and a central panel with a carved oval patera beneath stylised brackets. Below the double cupboard doors with arched panels and brass escutcheons, the sideboard stands on arched block feet connected by a shaped apron. In a contemporary home, this sideboard suits placement in a dining room, living room, or hallway to provide practical storage. The interior includes a shelf on one side and a shelf with a fitted inner drawer on the other. The construction and decoration reflect the English Country House style of the early 20th century, combining traditional storage functionality with characteristic Arts and Crafts architectural detailing.

FAQs

Originating in the early 20th century, Edwardian Arts and Crafts furniture emphasizes functional form, visible timber joinery, and restrained decorative elements. It blends traditional British cabinetmaking with simpler, cleaner silhouettes compared to earlier Victorian designs.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilized solid timbers such as mahogany, oak, and walnut, often featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and solid wood back panels. Fittings were typically cast from brass or iron, including teardrop handles, drop pulls, and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display hand-finished joinery, natural timber grain variations, and original brass hardware showing slight surface oxidisation. Look for structural elements such as panelled cupboard doors, carved wood paterae, and fluted side pilasters typical of the era.

Place the piece in a dining room, hallway, or living area to serve as a focal storage unit. Contrast the dark wood tones by hanging contemporary artwork above the piece or styling the surface with ceramic vessels and neutral lighting.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year to nourish the timber finish. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or discolouration.
