This Regency patinated bronze inkstand takes the form of a Roman bath sarcophagus in the manner of Benjamin Vulliamy, dating from circa 1820. The dark brown metal object rests on four well cast lion paw feet above a stepped platform base with recessed pen holders, and includes a matching lid topped with a turned hexagonal finial. Classical ring-shaped hardware handles adorn each end, while a central relief medallion masks the front surface. The piece measures 18 cm high, 24 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. Positioned upon a gentleman's library office desk, the inkstand serves as both a decorative centrepiece and a practical writing accessory. Its interior contains three divided sections with replacement ink wells alongside a period pounce pot. The heavy patinated finish and architectural mouldings complement traditional writing surfaces, while the compact footprint ensures easy placement on desks or writing tables.

Regency metalwork from the early nineteenth century frequently drew inspiration from Classical antiquity and Egyptian motifs, incorporating sarcophagus forms, lion paw feet, and relief medallions into functional desktop objects.

Craftsmen primarily utilised heavy cast bronze, brass, and patinated alloys, often pairing them with molded slate, marble, or timber bases to create substantial desktop pieces.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit detailed hand-finishing, significant physical weight, original age-appropriate surface patination, and period construction details such as hand-cut screws and cast seam marks.

These structured bronze objects are frequently placed on modern executive desks, dark wood bookshelves, or console tables to add historical weight and textural contrast to modern interiors.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and avoid moisture or chemical solvents, periodically applying a thin layer of neutral microcrystalline wax to protect the original surface patination.
