This Edwardian sterling silver cigarette case is an antique piece from 1908 made by Sampson Mordan and Co of London. The curved rectangular item has a polished silver finish and features a raised relief figure of a golfer in mid-swing on the front cover. The design includes a hinged cover, original cigarette retainer clips fitted to the inside, and sharp hallmarks. Visible signs of age include small dents, light bruises, surface scratches, and tarnish. Measuring 7.5 cm in width, 8.5 cm in height, and 2 cm in depth with a weight of 110 g, the case fits comfortably in a pocket. It functions as a usable item that works well on display on an office desk or in a gentleman's library. The piece carries an engraving on the reverse relating to Stillorgan Park Golf Club and serves as a practical desktop accessory.

During the Edwardian era, silver cigarette cases became prominent personal accessories, frequently embellished with embossed or engraved details representing sporting interests, crests, or decorative patterns.

These cases were typically constructed from sterling silver, hallmarked to guarantee purity, and engineered with internal elastic bands or retaining bars and a flush spring hinge mechanism.

Authenticity is verified by British assay marks detailing the town mark, date letter, standard mark, and makers mark stamped into the silver on the interior lip or rim.

A small silver case can be styled on an office desk, valet tray, or bookshelf alongside traditional desk accessories to add historical interest and reflective texture.

Sterling silver should be polished gently with a soft cotton cloth and specialized silver polish, avoiding abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that can strip applied patination or detail.
