This late 19th century Chinese export plate is made from porcelain with a celadon green glaze. The circular dish displays a central figurative reserve depicting several figures in conversation amongst architectural and natural elements, hand-painted in multi-coloured enamels including pink, blue, yellow, and green. The main panel is bordered by various floral sprays, blooming branches, butterflies, and perched birds distributed across the pale green ground. The rim features a warm orange-brown tone, and the exterior surface maintains a smooth celadon glaze finish. At 25.5 cm wide, the plate is sized appropriately for display on a sideboard top or as part of a decorative cabinet arrangement. Traditional in style and origin, the piece suits an English Country House interior aesthetic, combining well with other oriental porcelain or classical decorative items. Placed on a flat surface in a living room, dining room, or hallway, the dish functions purely as a decorative object rather than for everyday service. The hand-painted details and soft palette provide visual texture to a display shelf, mantelpiece, or dedicated side table setting.

Chinese export porcelain was crafted in specialized kilns, primarily in Jingdezhen and Guangzhou, specifically for western markets from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Celadon-glazed wares with polychrome Famille Rose enamel decoration became particularly popular during the Qing Dynasty for overseas trade.

These ceramics were crafted from refined kaolin clay, fired at high temperatures to achieve a vitrified porcelain body with a soft green celadon glaze. Overglaze enamels were subsequently hand-painted onto the surface and fired a second time at lower temperatures to set the vibrant colours.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-painted variations in the brushwork, slight irregularities in the porcelain surface, and unglazed foot rims showing natural age oxidation. The enamels often feature raised, tactile textures rather than flat, modern printed transfers.

Decorative porcelain plates are commonly mounted on walls in symmetry groups, placed on acrylic or wooden display stands atop sideboards, or integrated into curated bookshelf displays alongside art books and framed works.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent applied with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, chemical solvents, or dishwashers, as these can wear away fragile overglaze enamels and gilded accents.
