This Adam style fireplace dog grate originates from 1910 and follows the grand Regency design aesthetic. Constructed from cast iron and brass, it combines a black finish with bright gold highlights on the apron, front feet, and decorative finials. The serpentine front incorporates a pierced brass apron below horizontal cast iron fire bars, flanked by fluted uprights with ball finials. The tall arched backplate displays a classical urn in relief, framed by hanging swags and smaller finial motifs. Standing on four turned fluted legs with pad feet, the assembly measures 50 cm high, 67 cm wide, and 33 cm in total depth, with a grate width of 42 cm and a depth of 24 cm. Positioned on a fireplace hearth, this period fire basket suits a working or decorative fireplace in a drawing room, dining room, or library. The original cast iron and brass surfaces show authentic patination appropriate for an untouched antique accessory of this era. It provides a striking focal point for traditional interior settings, bringing classic neoclassical decorative elements directly to the chimney breast without the need for extensive structural modification.

Designed in the late 18th-century Neoclassical tradition popularised by architect Robert Adam, these grates feature classical motifs such as urns, drapery swags, and serpentine fronts with pierced brasswork.

Traditional fire grates from this period combine heavy cast iron for the backplate and fuel basket with polished or cast brass for decorative elements, such as front legs, finials, and aprons.

Authentic period grates display hand-finished casting marks, square-headed nuts or hand-cut threads, natural surface oxidisation on ironwork, and subtle irregularities in pierced brass aprons.

A period fire grate can be positioned inside an open brick fireplace, used as a decorative focal point in a non-working hearth with LED candles, or displayed alongside minimalist stone surrounds.

Cast iron parts should be treated with black grate polish or iron paste to prevent rust, while brass components require gentle polishing with a non-abrasive metal cleaner and a soft cloth.
