Antique Silver Tavannes Pocket Watch, 1918

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver Tavannes pocket watch, 1918.

The watch has a good quality signed 15-jewel (3 adjustments) stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and is and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for Birmingham 1918, with a case maker’s mark for Aaron Dennison, the English watch case maker and supplier to many watch makers. The case is in good condition, just a couple of small patches of gentle unevenness, nothing too serious.

The acrylic lens is in good condition, as is the dial.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

This Edwardian pocket watch is an open-face silver piece housing a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and a small seconds sub-dial at six o'clock. The silver case displays a polished finish, accompanied by a ribbed crown at the top and a circular hanging loop. The watch face is protected by a clear acrylic lens and features classic black hands pointing to the hour and minute markers. Small patches of gentle unevenness appear on the metal casing, showing signs of its age from 1918. Internal mechanisms include a stem-winding movement protected by an inner hinged cover. The silver case carries hallmarks inside both backs for Birmingham alongside a case maker's mark. Suitable as a collector's item for a gentleman's library or study desk, the watch sits securely in a presentation box when not in use. It functions as a portable timepiece that can be displayed within a collection of vintage instruments or period accessories.

Open-face pocket watches feature a glass crystal directly over the dial without a protective metal cover. By the early twentieth century, these timepieces typically incorporated stem-winding mechanisms, sub-seconds registers, and standardized enamel dials.

Swiss manufacturers commonly crafted cases from sterling silver, nickel, or gold plate, housing mechanical lever movements. Dials were predominantly fired enamel on copper discs with hand-painted or printed numerals.

Authentic period watches feature stamped hallmarks or purity marks inside the case back, serial numbers on the movement, fired enamel dials with crisp numeral printing, and period-appropriate hand styles such as spade or poire hands.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed on a glass dome watch stand, positioned within a pocket watch display case on a desk, or integrated into a framedshadow box cabinet alongside historical horological items.

Keep silver cases free from moisture and wipe gently with a microfibre cloth. Mechanical movements should be serviced by a qualified horologist periodically, and polish should be used sparingly to avoid damaging stamps and engravings.
