Antique Small Georgian Style Mahogany Bureau | Fitted Interior

19th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 19th century small inlaid Georgian style bureau in mahogany, a beautifully detailed piece where the exceptional grain immediately catches the eye.

Four drawers provide useful space and are finished with decorative brass handles, creating an elegant contrast against the richly figured timber.

Intricate inlaid detailing decorates the bureau, forming beautiful patterns that add further interest and highlight the quality of the design.

Opening the bureau reveals a fitted interior with numerous small storage compartments and a green writing surface, bringing a lovely contrast to the exterior. The mahogany grain is a true highlight, displaying striking natural patterns and rich variations in colour that give the piece wonderful depth and individuality.

Its smaller proportions make it ideal for a bedroom, study or living space, providing a practical writing area without requiring a large amount of room.

In good condition, well made and of good quality, this highly desirable bureau stands out for its exceptional grain, beautiful inlay and charming fitted interior.

FAQs

Originating in the eighteenth century, the Georgian writing bureau was designed as a compact piece of furniture combining storage drawers with a sloped, hinged lid that drops down to create a flat writing desk. The interior typically features small drawers, pigeonholes, and document compartments for organisation.

Traditional bureaux from this period were crafted using high-grade timber, predominantly mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring flame veneers and satinwood marquetry inlays. Cabinetry details include hand-cut dovetail joints, solid oak or pine drawer linings, and cast brass swan-neck or loop handles.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-saw marks on secondary timbers, uneven hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, and genuine age-related wear around keyholes and drawer runners. Cast brass hardware typically shows mild oxidisation and original fitting marks on the interior face of the wood.

A compact mahogany bureau serves as an efficient workstation in a home office, bedroom alcove, or living room corner where space is limited. The rich timber tones contrast effectively with neutral wall paint, contemporary lighting, and modern soft furnishings.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the original patina. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, movement, or veneer fading.
