This Victorian fireside coal scuttle originates from 1880 England, constructed from richly figured walnut timber in a warm brown colour paired with bright brass hardware. The slanted drop front displays ornate pierced brass strap hinges, decorative corner brackets, and a central circular boss, while the top carries a scrolling cast brass handle mounted between curved side panels. Measuring 36 cm high, 31.5 cm wide, and 58 cm deep, the body stands securely on a flat base. Position this piece beside an open fire or wood burner in a living room, study, or period interior to store coal, kindling, or other hearth accessories. The surface displays light age-related wear, small marks, and a pleasing patina across the timber grain, with a hinged lid that opens for interior access. The compact proportions allow placement directly on the hearth or floor as a practical container and a decorative accent in traditional settings.

A coal purdonium is a decorative fireside container designed during the nineteenth century to hold coal or kindling discreetly near a hearth, typically featuring a drop-down sloped front.

Traditional Victorian coal boxes were constructed from cabinet hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, and were reinforced with cast brass mounts, hinges, and carrying handles.

Authentic pieces frequently display dovetail joinery, original cast brass hardware, hand-chased mounting plates, and removable internal metal liners designed to protect the timber from moisture and dust.

A coal purdonium can be positioned beside a contemporary wood-burning stove to store kindling, or utilised as an accent piece in a hallway or living room for hidden storage.

The timber surface should be polished periodically with a natural beeswax compound, while the brass mounts can be wiped with a microfiber cloth to manage oxidisation.
