This Arts and Crafts hanging lantern dates from around 1900 and exemplifies the period's commitment to honest, handcrafted materials. The cylindrical shade combines a dark brown hand-stitched leather framework with translucent vellum panels, held together by visible hand-hammered rivets and structural strapwork. The piece terminates in decorative scrolled feet at the base, while the top features a conical leather cap suspended from a twisted metal chain. The fixture measures 36 cm high with a total drop of approximately 62 cm, and includes a ceiling rose and a brass bulb holder. In a modern interior, this functional work of art brings character to a gentleman's library, study or hallway. The warm glow filtering through the vellum panels creates an inviting atmosphere, while the rich tones of the dark leather complement traditional wood panelling, leather armchairs and heritage colour schemes. It arrives fully rewired with silk braid and PAT safety checked, making it ready to install and use in an appropriate setting.

Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Arts and Crafts leather lanterns were handcrafted light fixtures designed as a reaction against mass industrialisation, emphasising natural materials and visible craftsmanship.

These lanterns typically feature hand-stitched hide or leather frameworks, translucent vellum or parchment panels, and forged iron or metal fittings.

Authentic period pieces display hand-sewn stitching, hand-hammered rivets, age-appropriate patination on the leather, and organic variations within the vellum panelling.

Hang the lantern in an entryway, hallway, or above a dining space to introduce warm texture and historical atmosphere to contemporary rooms.

Keep the fixture away from direct heat sources and moisture, dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply specialised leather conditioner sparingly to prevent drying and cracking.
