Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian ebonised and walnut crossbanded davenport desk dates from 1860 and measures 87 cm high, 54.5 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, with a fall height of 72 cm. The piece combines a black ebonised finish with warm brown walnut crossbanding, complemented by a green leather writing surface on the sloping fall, a brass gallery rail atop the stationery compartment, and turned wooden knobs on the drawers. The stationery compartment houses a fitted interior, while the pedestal holds four side drawers and four dummy drawers, all finished with walnut crossbanding. Shaped platform supports hold the desk above turned bun feet fitted with castors. In a contemporary home, this compact Davenport desk suits a study, bedroom, or living space as a functional writing table or workspace. The enclosed stationery section and bank of drawers provide practical storage for correspondence and writing materials. The traditional proportions allow placement in tighter areas where a standard desk would not fit, while the ebonised finish and warm wood tones coordinate with various interior styles.

FAQs

A Davenport desk is a compact writing desk characterised by an inclined writing surface hinged at the back, positioned above a pedestal containing side drawers. Popularised during the nineteenth century, legend attributes its name to Captain Davenport, who commissioned the first known design from Gillows of Lancaster.

Victorian Davenports were constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, frequently enhanced with decorative veneers, marquetry, or ebonised finishes. High-quality examples feature gilt-tooled leather writing surfaces, solid brass gallery rails, and hand-dovetailed drawer joinery.

Authentic nineteenth-century Davenports feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the side drawers, period brass casters, and original brass locks. Look for signs of authentic timber oxidisation beneath the slant lid, hand-carved decorative supports, and construction wear consistent with historical age.

A Davenport desk functions as a compact focal point in a hallway, bedroom alcove, or home office due to its small footprint. Pair it with a simple contemporary accent chair, minimal table lamp, and understated brass accessories to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern decor.

Keep the desk away from direct sunlight and modern heat sources to prevent timber movement and veneer lifting. Clean ebonised and timber surfaces with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to non-ebonised wood elements, and condition the leather writing insert with specialist leather balm.
