This Scottish Regency library secretaire originates from circa 1810 and is manufactured from mahogany with brass hardware and leather upholstery. The warm brown timber displays an old patinated finish alongside brass drop handles on the pull-out writing drawer, an adjustable writing slope covered in dark green leather, internal tray shelves behind the lower cabinet doors, and splayed bracket feet. An engraved silver plaque rests on the top surface, detailing a historical legacy linked to Anna Lady Erskine and Gabriela Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore. Measuring 96.5 cm high, 109 cm wide and 59 cm deep, the bureau functions as a practical writing desk and storage cabinet in a gentleman's study or home library. The piece includes a top section featuring small drawers inlaid with the alphabet, secret compartments, and a lock stamped by Joseph Bramah of 14 Piccadilly. The lower section contains folio slides, complemented by original Edinburgh pattern brass mounts. It stands in an original old used condition. In a modern home, the secretaire provides both surface workspace and storage capacity, serving as a focal point for correspondence and organisation within a traditional study, home office, or living room setting.

Regency period furniture, spanning roughly 1811 to 1830, is characterised by classical proportions, clean lines, and the extensive use of dark hardwoods like mahogany and rosewood. Design features frequently incorporate brass inlaid ornament, reeded legs, and refined symmetry inspired by Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquity.

Regency secretaires were primarily constructed using solid and veneered mahogany, often sourced from the West Indies. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, while fittings were typically cast in brass, with writing surfaces lined in tool-embossed leather or felt baize.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer construction, hand-planed secondary woods, and original brass lock mechanisms. Look for natural age-related shrinkage in timber panels, authentic patination around original brass handles, and evidence of historical hand-tool marks.

A mahogany secretaire can serve as a focal point in a home office, living area, or hallway by contrasting dark timber against neutral wall shades. Combining classic cabinetry with modern lighting and understated contemporary artwork creates a balanced, layered space.

Maintain mahogany furniture by positioning it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity changes to prevent timber warping. Clean surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish and patina.
