Antique Cauldon “Chariot” Blue & White Transferware Plate – Staffordshire, circa 1920

A particularly attractive English blue and white transferware plate by Cauldon, Staffordshire, decorated in the sought-after Chariot pattern.

The centre features an exceptionally detailed classical scene depicting a two-horse chariot and figures before monumental classical architecture, with an extensive mountainous landscape beyond. The finely engraved scene is surrounded by an elaborate repeating foliate and palmette-style border, finished with an attractive gently shaped edge.

The quality of the transfer printing is excellent, with particularly fine detail visible in the horses, chariot, figures, architecture, trees and distant landscape.

The reverse carries the distinctive blue printed CAULDON ENGLAND backstamp incorporating a horse and chariot, corresponding with the subject of the pattern.

Produced in Staffordshire during the early 20th century and displaying the strong classical revival influence characteristic of the period.

Condition: Very good antique condition. No obvious cracks, significant chips or restoration noted. There is a small manufacturing/firing blemish to the reverse together with minor surface and age-related wear consistent with use.
