Engine turning, or guilloche, is an engraving technique using a lathe to create precise, repeating geometric patterns on metal surfaces. Popularised throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, silver pill boxes featuring engine turning were widely crafted as personal functional accessories and vanity accoutrements.

George V silver boxes were primarily crafted from sterling silver, comprising 92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. Makers employed techniques such as machine engraving, hand-chasing, and soldering to assemble lids and decorative borders.

Authentic British sterling silver from this period displays a set of official hallmarks stamped into the metal. These include the Lion Passant mark for sterling purity, an assay office symbol (such as the Leopards Head for London or Anchor for Birmingham), a specific date letter corresponding to 1917, and a makers initials mark.

Small silver boxes serve as subtle metallic accents when displayed on a bedside table, dressing table tray, or office desk. They can be integrated alongside books or within a small display case to add textural variation to contemporary surfaces.

Preserve sterling silver by gently polishing it with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver cream to remove tarnishing and oxidisation. Store the object in a dry environment inside a silver-cloth pouch to minimise atmospheric tarnish formation.
