Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early eighteenth-century William and Mary style slant-front bureau on a stand is fashioned from burr walnut and walnut timber in warm brown tones. The upper section comprises a sloping hinged writing lid with a brass escutcheon, which opens to reveal an interior fitted with pigeonholes and small drawers. The table base stands upon six baluster-turned legs joined by low box stretchers, featuring an arched apron and two front legs that pivot to support the fold-down writing surface. Brass hardware secures the lid mechanism. The piece measures 94 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, making it a compact addition to a gentleman's library, a study, or a living room corner as a functional writing desk. Placement in a traditional hallway or bedroom also works well for surface display and storage.

FAQs

A bureau on stand is a writing desk featuring a sloped, hinged lid that opens to reveal a writing surface and interior compartments, elevated on turned legs or baluster supports. Originating in the late 17th and early 18th centuries in Britain, these pieces represent a transition between simple writing boxes and larger chest-of-drawers bureaux.

Early walnut bureaux typically feature solid oak or pine carcase structures veneered with figured walnut or burr walnut panels. The legs were traditionally turned on a lathe into baluster or trumpet shapes and connected with perimeter stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic early 18th-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-forged iron or brass hardware, and original book-matched walnut veneers with natural age-related patination. Look for hand-planed secondary timbers inside drawers and evidence of historic construction methods beneath the frame.

A walnut bureau on stand serves as a functional accent piece in a home office, hallway, or living room space. Positioning it against a neutral backdrop highlights the grain of the wood, while pairing it with a simple modern chair balances historic character with modern functionality.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with fluctuating humidity to prevent the veneer from lifting or cracking.
