English Delftware Blue and White Dragon Saucer Dish, circa 1760

A fine and unusually well-preserved English delftware blue and white dragon saucer dish, dating to circa 1760.

This attractive shallow saucer dish is boldly painted in underglaze blue with a Chinese-inspired dragon chasing a flaming pearl, surrounded by stylised clouds. The design reflects the strong influence of Chinese porcelain and East Asian decoration on English ceramics during the mid-18th century.

Measuring approximately 19.5 cm (7¾ inches) in diameter, the dish is in exceptionally good condition for English delftware of this period. It is free from chips, cracks and restoration, with only the expected glaze crazing associated with this type of 18th-century tin-glazed earthenware.

The reverse retains a couple of previous owner's collection labels, adding useful historical interest and provenance to the piece.

Historical Note

The dragon and flaming pearl pattern was copied directly from Chinese decorative designs and became particularly fashionable on English porcelain during the 18th century. Examples on English delftware are considerably rarer, making this an interesting example for collectors of early English ceramics, delftware and Chinese-inspired 18th-century decorative wares.

Dragon decoration appears to have been produced at several English delftware centres, including Lancaster, although the pattern remains comparatively uncommon on English delftware.

An appealing and unusually well-preserved example of 18th-century English delftware, combining a striking Chinese-inspired dragon design with excellent condition and documented provenance.

FAQs

English delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in Britain from the sixteenth through the late eighteenth centuries. It characteristically features hand-painted cobalt blue decoration inspired by imported East Asian porcelain motifs.

Delftware was formed from a soft earthenware clay body, fired initially, and then dipped into an opaque lead glaze modified with tin oxide. Metal oxide pigments, predominantly cobalt blue, were painted directly onto the unfired glaze prior to a final high-temperature firing.

Authentic period pieces display a soft buff clay body visible where glaze has flaked, subtle glaze irregularities or pinholes, and characteristic rim wear known as fritting. The underglaze decoration exhibits freehand brushwork consistent with eighteenth-century production techniques.

Delftware ceramic pieces are commonly styled on plate stands within traditional dressers, arranged along a mantelpiece, or wall-mounted to create a decorative focal point that bridges classic and contemporary decor.

Due to the porous nature of the earthenware body beneath damaged glaze, delftware must never be immersed in water or placed in a dishwasher. Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth slightly dampened with water, avoiding chemical detergents.
